The market matching shoppers and deals breaks down in an environment in which retailers repeatedly move up sales in an effort to preempt one another. What results is Black Friday deals premiering on a Wednesday, or Cyber Monday events that begin on Saturday night. I suppose the assumption here is that shoppers tend to shop indiscriminately until funds run low, and then just stop shopping (or start to shop more sparingly). I wonder how profitable this tactic is after you account for returns.

(Neiman Marcus and Saks are direct competitors, but the competition seems especially fierce in recent months. Their deals not only stagger now, but often coincide.
