Green Gingham (+ Mid-Week Required Reading)

I have very little to say about this outfit. By now you should know that green-and-blue is my crutch (and should be yours too).

What
I have are a ton of articles for you to read, some dense, others light,
as I am sure most of you will need to kill time aboard or awaiting
transportation to wherever your holiday plans take you.

I stopped by Ann Taylor last week to try on the holiday collection. Here are some pictures and short reviews:
I loved the Day Coat online (especially in “Smokey Pond”) but thought it was a bit too insubstantial for New England winters in person. The fit (below in XXS) was also loose and boxy.

Day Coat

And though I was not particularly impressed by the Ombre Plaid Coat‘s stock photo, I fell in love with it in person. The coat in XXS (below) fit me (5’2) fine in overall length but the sleeves were a little long. The material was cozy and warm. The Chalet Coat was also a winner for me; it reminded me of the J. Crew Wool Melton Duffle Coat (reviewed here), just with a less boxy shape.

Another style that I loved (and plan to collect in all colors) was the Cable Turtleneck Sweater. The XS fit me in a relaxed way and the material was not scratchy.

I also tried on the Jeweled Shift Dress and the Shimmer Flounce Skirt. The former looked beautiful on the rack and the mannequin but the shape was not perfectly flattering on my already rectangular shape (I’ll give it a shot). I think when styled properly, it could work for more body types. Both styles fit true to size (below in 00P).

I really wanted to love the Wool Blend Open Cardigan but the XXSP was much too tight for me in the arms with layers underneath and the larger sizes didn’t fit me well in the torso. I also felt it was a little overpriced so if you are interested, wait for a discount (and Ann Taylor isn’t stingy with those).

Cropped Cable Sweater

Ann Taylor Cropped Cable Sweater | J. Crew Majesty Peacoat | Zipia Lace Top | H&M Faux Leather Pants | c/o Ann Taylor Mini Pebbled Signature Tote | c/o Marc Fisher Aprille High Heel Dress Booties

A cream cropped sweater has been on my wishlist for several seasons now but no affordable option registered on my radar until the Ann Taylor Cropped Cable Sweater. This sweater is more tightly knit and hides base layers better than similar options.

Though I wish the length were an inch shorter, the current length lends it more versatility. Layering the sweater over longer tops also allows me to wear the sweater with low-rise bottoms without being concerned about unintentionally exposing my midsection.

I wanted to get this review up while the sweater is 60% off on the Ann Taylor website (no code needed, discount taken in cart); sizes in all three colors are aplenty.

In XXSP, the sweater measures 19.5″ in length, 15″ across the bust, and has 18″ sleeves.

Some sale picks: Cheetah Print Cocoon Dress and Embellished Skirt (from this post), Faux Leather Pleated Skirt, Colorblock Crepe Blouse, Stripe Collared Peplum Top, Crepe Ruffle Blouse, Textured Jacket, Pindot Flounce Skirt, Faux Leather Sleeved Striped Top, Billie Cutout Leather Peeptoe Shooties (own and love), Mixed Media Button Down Shirt, Lace Applique 3/4 Sleeve Cardigan, Flapper Statement Necklace, Faux Leather Flounce Skirt, Split Neck Ottoman Dress, Embellished Collar Crepe Shell, Embellished All-Season Stretch Pencil Skirt, Trench Shell, Embellished Faux Leather Collar Crepe Shell, Dressed Up Denim Jacket, Structured Pullover, Signature Skinny Belt, Ribbed Day Dress, and Ottoman V-Neck Sweater Dress.

If clothes are an outlet for personal expression, nothing makes a statement quite like prints do. I wear some jewelry–a watch, simple necklaces, the occasional bracelet–but do not find that particularly striking pieces mesh well with my lifestyle. In the absence of accessories that deliver powerful punches, prints add most to my outfits with the least amount of effort.

Kate Spade New York does prints better than many of its peers (imo); its abstract bow print drained my fun fund last year (two skirts, a scarf, a tote, and a wallet finally put out that fire) and I was very sad that this “picnic” print dress sold out before steep discounts could be taken. Luckily, I found the dress in my size on eBay several months after the season ended and now count it among my most treasured possessions.

The newest print addition to my closet is the Transcontinental Travel Tag Scarf which I ordered today with the Kate Spade F&F discount (30% off with code F14FFUS). In my cart are the Prospect Boots and Maxine Pearl Sweater. I am also eying the Izarra Heels, Dorothy Coat, Lee Bow Skirt, Silk Mini Dress, Bow Wristlet, Leopard Licorice Heels, and Denisa Dress.
