Maybe it’s the season, but things feel pretty spooky in fashion retail. Mall fixtures like J.Crew, Banana Republic, and Ann Taylor, which spent all of post-COVID retraining consumer expectations on discounts, have been discounting more aggressively in the second half of the year. Take, for example, the Odette Sweater Lady Jacket in Cotton-Blend Bouclé, which J.Crew initially resisted putting on sale; it has been “on promotion” every day this month and is (at most) a few weeks ago from hitting the sale section permanently.
While retail sales are not a perfect canary in the coal mine for the health of the overall economy, we can expect holiday sales to kick off earlier than usual and should see deals that rival ones found in the Before Times this holiday season.
