For those looking for a functional bag with a classic shape, Madewell’s The Transport Shoulder Crossbody Bag is a bag that I used nearly daily last summer and which has overwhelmingly positive reviews online.
This letter-sized bag (8-1/4″H x 11″W x 2-3/8″D) holds a surprising amount under the top zipper, including objects of an awkward shape (e.g., tablet, compact umbrella, small water bottle, oversized sunglasses in hard-shell case, etc.) but manages to avoid looking bulky. While the leather starts off a little stiff, the material will grow softer with wear.
This is a wonderfully simple everyday bag that can take you from day to night with its two adjustable, removable straps: one in a crossbody length, and a top handle that will also work as a shoulder strap. There is some organization built in–a useful large exterior slip pocket and small interior slip pocket–but the bag isn’t weighed down by the extra material.
The retail price of $158.00 is already reasonable, but the sale price of $59.49 ($84.99 less the 30% discount) for the bag in Warm Thistle, a pretty lilac, is practically a steal.
