I caught a cold after going maskless at a multiday wedding celebration earlier this month. After the initial panic over COVID subsided, I resigned myself to a week of rest. And as soon as I relaxed, I realized just how tired I had been feeling. It turns out the threat of nuclear escalation, fear of intractable inflation and an economic downturn, dread of the rising tolerance for extremism and conspiracy theories, prospect of another year of COVID-related disruptions, and general existential crisis are a recipe for burnout.
To reset, I silenced my phone, made pots of warm soup, binged two seasons of The Witcher (then listened to Burn Butcher Burn on repeat), and tried to find a bit of calm in the chaos that suffuse this moment.
These moments of respite from the grind provide us the fuel to keep going. And that is why I am so grateful for this blog, where I can indulge in frivolousness without judgment.
Thanks, as always, for your readership. Have a very safe, healthy, and happy New Year. See you all in 2023!
