After months of dither, during which my size sold out, I was forced to pass on the J. Crew Daphne Topcoat in Italian Tweed last winter, a decision I sorely regretted. So imagine my delight when I found it in this fall’s lineup.
A statement coat, while not as “classic” as an olive green down coat or a black wool tailored coat, is much easier to justify for those with a closet full of solid-colored outerwear options. And this tweed coat is a no-brainer.
MATERIAL & CONSTRUCTION The medium-weight nubby tweed is not the most luxe (46% acrylic/34% wool/10% polyester/7% nylon/3% other), but the flecks of color in the saturated palette are gorgeous. And it’s fully lined with an interior lipstick pocket, which is now a novelty at J. Crew. There are no workmanship-related issues to note here (seams lie even; buttons are reinforced; no loose threads).
SEASONALITY Not a “winter” coat on its own, as it’s designed for milder weather (50s-60s). The fit as designed will allow for a heavier sweater underneath so you can layer it appropriately for late fall.
FIT The Daphne is cut somewhat generously so those between sizes should size down. The difference between petite and regular sizes is about 2 inches in length and an inch in sleeve, shoulder, and underarm-to-underarm measurements. See below for measurements of the coat in 00P and 00R.
PRICE The $325 retail price isn’t inexpensive, but I feel is reasonable compared to like items. The piece has been included in recent store-wide promotions, so a 40% to 50% off discount is likely.
