One of the only redeeming features of winter is that it coincides with the holiday season. And there are few things I enjoy more than being away from work and wrapped up in blankets while reading lurid potboilers and nursing a cup of hot tea. Also central to this vision is a pair of cozy socks.

I’m partnering with Solmate Socks to share some of their fun designs, which make for great gifts this holiday season. These quirky, warm, and comfortable socks are made in a small knitting mill in North Carolina, and are knit with recycled cotton yarn, mostly scraps from the production of t-shirts. For the eco-conscious, Solmate Socks subscribes to a “Zero Waste” philosophy and it works with a network of weavers to take scrap materials and turn them into rugs.

Solmate Socks are as great for lounging around the house as they are for outdoor adventures. But what I enjoy most about these socks is the design: they are so interesting that I can’t resist trying to incorporate them into my outfits. I sometimes feel that bare legs with shoes is the fashion equivalent of an unfinished mural–occasionally appropriate, but often just lacking, and wearing colorful socks is one way to add some visual interest to this often-neglected part of one’s outfit.

I am a quick convert to Solmate Socks, and already plan to add a few more pairs to my sock drawer. The knee socks (adult socks come in three types: ankle, crew, and knee; Solmate Socks also sells socks for kids and babies) in particular will come in handy when I break out rain boots for slush season, as they are natural companions for my colorful rain boots.

And, in time for holiday shopping, you can use code FUNSOCKS for free shipping on all orders; this code expires December 31, 2017.
