Review: J. Crew The 2007 Italian Stadium-Cloth Wool Toggle Coat

J. Crew The 2007 Italian Stadium-Cloth Wool Toggle Coat in Bright Butternut  (size 00P) || J. Crew Striped Crewneck Sweater with Side Snaps (size XXS) || Zara Skirt with Gold Buttons in Navy (size XS) || Salvatore Ferragamo Medium Grained Leather Bow Shoulder Bag in Mirto || J.Crew J. Crew Academy Leather Loafers in Bittersweet Chocolate

J. Crew’s mounting financial woes and frequent leadership changes finally led it to do the one thing that it previously shunned: reintroduce/recycle old designs. Why it waited this long to open its cavernous vault of past hits eludes me. In any case, I am on board this nostalgia train as I missed out on nearly all of its early-aughts bestsellers.

The “iconic” style that caught my eye immediately is The 2007 Italian Stadium-Cloth Wool Toggle Coat that I know well, having come across archived images of it from the Style Guide on Pinterest. J. Crew made some adjustments to the original design that I am indifferent to, like adding a detachable hood and removing some accent seams.

To keep the price of the coat under $300 (retail is $298), J. Crew is using a version of the “stadium-cloth wool” that is 70% wool and 30% nylon, and slightly thinner than some of my older “stadium-cloth” coats. It’s plenty warm despite the lower wool content, though.

I ordered the style in two colors–“Bright Butternut,” a canary yellow, and “Heather Beige,” which is a beige with pink undertones (it reminds me of my “Dusty Giner” Chateau Parka)–and in my usual size (00P). I thought it ran slightly small and short (though the length may have been intentional). I like my coats to end just above the knee, but this style hits at mid-thigh. While I already have a number of bright yellow coats, the style in Bright Butternut was a keeper for me, though in retrospect I probably should’ve exchanged it for a size in regular length.

(The coat in 00P measures about 30″ in length, and 17.25″ from underarm to underarm, with sleeves that are 22.25″ long.)

While debating which of the two colors to keep, I decided to play dress up which resulted in some photos. Here are some ideas for how one might wear this coat.
