Someone who stumbled upon this blog by way of this WIFW post on midi tulle skirts wrote to ask if I could share some ideas for how to style a black tulle skirt, and I was happy to oblige, even though I’ve reined in my tulle habit in recent years, having graduated into an age bracket in which tulle (on the regular) has become unsuitable.
The only black tulle skirt currently in my possession is the Maje Jasmine Tulle Skirt pictured below, which caused quite a stir last fall in certain parts of the blogosphere (it lived up to its hype). The skirt is very full and quite short (even on me), so it’s been challenging finding an occasion for it, but I think dramatic pieces can still have a place in any wardrobe.

When working with a statement piece, you must resist the temptation to dress it down to the point of obviating the fun of wearing it in the first place. Instead of trying to add length to the skirt by layering another skirt or a pair of pants underneath it, consider wearing a pair of over-the-knee boots to cover more skin.
And because the piece itself is so attention-grabbing on its own, I like to wear it with like colors lest the outfit become an unfortunate trend salad. In addition to the tulle and lace bodysuit and long-sleeve satin blouse that I show here, you might try a close-fitting turtleneck sweater worn with a statement necklace with your skirt as well.
The skirt may never be appropriate for occasions involving work contacts or be practical for running errands, but should be considered for holiday parties with friends or date nights.
