As an immoderate shopper, I am forced to adopt a draconian approach to closet management (guided by a firm rule of one in, one out). Every season I dedicate a whole day to culling items to be sold or donated, which often ends in my agonizing over older pieces that mysteriously survived past purges. The Ralph Lauren oxford shirt from this post is one example of clothes that I struggle to part with: I own close to a dozen of these shirts in various colors and stripes, and some haven’t been worn in a few years, but I hold out hope that I might one day revert to an older way of dressing.
And I might have! I’ve worn them every day this week, with sleeves rolled up and the top three buttons undone; along the way, I’ve also rediscovered the seersucker and linen jackets that would have been on the chopping block for donation next season, dashing my hopes of adding a score of summer maxis in their place.
I should be happy that I’ve reconnected with these older pieces, but the consumerist part of me can’t help but feel a little sad about the missed shopportunities.
