Mother’s Day Gift Guide

Mother’s Day (which falls on May 14th this year) is just around the corner, and I want to share some ideas for what you might get your mother (and grandmother, or other mother figures in your life).

Most years I pool resources with my brother and buy my mom a year’s worth of skincare products, or plan a weekend trip for her and my dad. But this year big brother warned me early that he’s doing his own thing, and that I am on my own.

Like many moms, my mom doesn’t appear to be missing anything material in her life, nor do any of her belongings necessitate an immediate replacement. As such, the ideas I came up with are fairly generic and inoffensive.

Reed diffusers in pretty packaging have become a go-to gift for me in the last year; it’s fairly foolproof as a gift. I especially like Jo Malone gift sets, as they are beautifully packaged.

If your special person is a cooking enthusiast, Le Creuset cast-iron cookware will likely put a smile on her face.

Practical accessories (e.g., wool/cashmere scarves and slim wallets with numerous compartments) are also gifts to consider.

While getting your mom new pajamas might seem unoriginal (perhaps bordering on lazy), it’s one of the best gifts for Mother’s Day. I am a big fan of Everlane’s Oxford Pajama Shirt and Pant; the fabric used is incredibly comfortable. Pair this gift with a spa gift certificate, a new set of sheets, and maybe a bottle of wine.

You also can’t really go wrong when you gift food in pretty packaging, be it a box of chocolate truffles, a tin of crispy crepes, or a set of loose tea tins. If this gift feels too insubstantial, maybe throw in a pair of dainty earrings or a set of bangles.

If you need a very last-minute gift, flowers are a last resort. Most florists offer a curated list of options for same-day pick-up or delivery for special occasions.

Happy (Mother’s Day) shopping!
