Season to Sparkle

Unlike clothing, jewelry always fits; they are also a relatively less
ostentatious form of self expression that showcases individuality and
taste.

This holiday season, I’ve partnered up with Jewelers Mutual Insurance Company to share a few items that I like to gift (which also happen to be some of my favorite pieces).

An effortless and timeless piece that I can’t imagine being without is the classic single-strand pearl necklace—the perfect complement for tweed dresses and button ups. And while they no longer cost the equivalent of a home down payment, replacing a mid-tier piece can still be costly.

At the end of my sophomore year in college, between preparing for finals, packing to move to a new dorm, and organizing a sendoff, I had neglected to service my car, which required parts that no auto repair shop in rural New Hampshire could provide easily. The parts inconveniently arrived on the day I was required to move out, and I had to abandon my belongings for a few hours to tend to the car. In my carelessness, I left everything outside my room, in unsealed boxes. When I came back later that day, I found my jewelry box missing; in it were strands of natural pearl necklaces and bracelets that my grandma had given to me over the years. While the sentimental value of those unrecoverable pieces cannot be properly assessed, it would’ve been nice if I could at least send an insurance check to my grandma to alleviate some of the guilt I felt. Jewelry insurers like Jewelers Mutual provide coverage in cases of loss, theft, damage, and mysterious disappearance (unexplained
loss).

Another style that I love is statement jewelry, and I picked up a few to gift this holiday season. They never fail to brighten even the dullest of outfits, or to complement equally eye-catching pieces.

And I don’t have pierced ears, but am nevertheless drawn to dangly earrings (and I am not alone, they are always well-received as a gift). But it’s perhaps for the best, because I am clumsy and forgetful. Even the most diligent of my friends can recount a few incidents in which they lost their favorite pair of earrings. And since most HOI or renters’ insurance policies don’t cover jewelry lost outside of the home, those with an affinity for diamond studs may want to seek coverage for those special pieces.
