A day to night dress is conceptually ambiguous, since there are no laws prescribing which dress can be worn when—that gold-sequined bodycon dress most people reserve for NYE parties could be a day dress, if you dare.
For me, a day to night dress is something that I could wear to work, and then continue wearing (with minor styling tweaks) for drinks with friends or on a dinner date without feeling out of place.
As its definition is amorphous, a good desk to dinner dress might mean different things for different people. My ideal day to night dress should have a modest neckline, a knee-length (or thereabouts) hemline, and understated but interesting details. It should also be constructed out of wrinkle-resistant material with a matte appearance.
Club Monaco’s Colby Scalloped Dress ticks all the boxes: the bateau neckline with short sleeves is demure; the tiered scallop detail is sweet, but not infantilizing; the smooth, mid-weight crepe material is untouched by hours of sitting; and the slightly-above-the-knee length straddles the line between serious and flirty.
The Colby Dress first came out in Spring of 2015, and has been popular enough to be brought back every season since. But demand seems to have weakened recently, as all three available colors are now on sale (use code WINTER16 for an extra 30% off).
(While a 40% off sale is expected for next month) I doubt a better discount will come along before sizes start to sell out, so my suggestion is to order while sizes are complete in both black and petal pink.
