I was allowed to roam freely around the house as a child, touching and playing with anything within reach. I would stand atop stools to paw large amethyst geodes, host tea parties for stuffed animals with fine china sets, destroy bed linens to “make clothes” for my Barbies, or rummage through my grandmother’s jewelry chest, throwing gemstones and ornamental rocks with sentimental value about as though they were toys. The only items I would treat delicately were my grandma’s pearl necklaces; I can’t explain why I felt differently about them, but I was always drawn to their luster.
Pearls (natural, farmed, or imitation) remain my favorite gemstone to this day. I will buy just about anything adorned with pearls, like this mostly impractical bodysuit.
Speaking of pearls, I am reminded of this old (from 2011) article about pearls that I enjoyed.
