One of the unexpected holiday gifts I received last year came from Ping, who possesses exceptional sewing and pattern-making skills (I had the pleasure of trying on two of her unique creations last fall when I visited SF).
This brocade dress is impeccably made and a few friends mistook it for the work of European couturiers (I don’t blame them, the precision and care she took to make the dress is astonishing).

As someone who can barely sew on a button, I have a special appreciation for garment construction though I don’t fully comprehend the conceptual genius behind every stitch, the type and position of the seams, the choice of lining, and the placement of darts.
I do know that when done right, as this dress was, clothing can have transformative powers.
