If we were to measure the value of things by the number of pockets they have, the J. Crew Convertible Toggle Coat would be worth its weight in twenty-dollar bills. It has four pockets in all: two patch pockets and two discreet side pockets.
A chronic overpacker like me can never carry enough band-aids, chapsticks, neosporin, and cough drops and this coat fully indulges my, uh, idiosyncrasy.

The coat has a hidden zipper closure concealed by toggles (points for functionality and extra points for fun details) and a removable hood which is convenient.
The only bone–and it’s a pretty substantial one– I have to pick with the coat is its lightness. It’s really not warm enough on its own in below-freezing temperatures (the fabric composition is 80% wool and 20% polyamide; no thinsulate).
The coat fits true to size for J. Crew outerwear but as it’s lightweight, those in cooler areas should size up to allow more layering action.
I wear this coat fairly regularly and am lucky enough to have found the Free People Wooly Toggle Coat earlier in the season on sale to wear interchangeably with the J. Crew version so I can dry clean one without feeling deprived of outerwear choices (how lucky I am to have such inconsequential problems).
