Allow me some artistic license to label this vibrant shade of violet “Radiant Orchid” because I have an irrational need to partake in Pantone’s 2014 Color of the Year.
The color featured on the Pantone website is what a laywoman like me would call “pinker lavender,” but generally speaking colors of the year tend to span a vast swath of the color map. And I happened to like this pinkish purple better than that pinkish purple.
Here’s how I intend to wear the color (and in the coming months you might see me experiment with some of these combinations): with neutrals I am really drawn to gray, black, and cream as potential pairing mates; for higher contrast I see it complementing turquoise or cobalt well. I’d also like to try the color with houndstooth or charcoal pinstripe prints.
In recent years I deliberately shy away from bright colors in large chunks because I personally don’t carry them well (a classic case of the color overpowering the person) but find that darker compound colors tend to be less ostentatious than their pastel or fluorescent counterparts.
