Happy Independence Day!
2013 has been an eventful year, to say the least. In the course of a day, SCOTUS struck down DOMA and maimed the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Just yesterday, the Egyptian military deposed Mohamed Morsi and stifled the growth of the Muslim Brotherhood, priming for perhaps the next chapter of the Arab Spring. In March, the Catholic Church elected (I use this term loosely) its first South American pope. April saw another act of domestic terrorism on American soil in the form of two bombs that killed three and injured scores more. Last month’s flash floods in India killed more than a thousand and displaced 20,000.
Freedom is as much a process as it is a static concept. Its definition evolves to the tune of greater understanding and tolerance (or conversely, to cupidity and ignorance).
On this day, when we celebrate and reflect on past victories, I think it is equally important to look ahead and imagine a freedom beyond that which we enjoy now.
If you have a moment, I urge you to visit Open Congress, a great resource to explore issues currently debated on senate and house floors, find an issue that you are passionate about, and write your representative to make your voice heard.
Then kick back and enjoy the fireworks, barbecue, and great company!
And, on to something a little more relevant to the subject of this blog: I was indifferent to my last stripes and floral attempt but think today’s effort is slightly stronger. Thin stripes seem slightly more versatile than their thicker counterparts.

I got this Gap Kids Striped Dress for $13 during last week’s sale and am in love. The shape is boxy but the material soft and the length surprisingly appropriate for someone who is 5’2 in size XXL. I may get this in another color come the next sale.
