I continued my pants search with a massive J. Crew order. J. Crew suits are a staple in many professional women’s closets and I would be remiss if I didn’t fully explore this option.
Overall, I was very pleased with the spectrum of fit available at J. Crew. I think women of very different shapes and sizes can all find pants there. I thought prices were on the higher end for basic, unlined pants but with the right discount I might just cut this search short and reorder some of these styles.
Style: Stovepipe Trouser in Stretch Wool (also available in Wool Flannel)
Color: Black/Navy/Heather Flannel
Fabric: 96% wool, 4% spandex. Unlined.
Fit: Best for those with a straighter shape and slim legs.
Care: Dry clean only
The Stovepipe Trousers would be perfect for someone with straight legs. Because my calves are bulky, the shape of these pants looked distorted on me.

Style: Café Trouser in Cotton
Color: Black/Navy/Desert
Fabric: 98% cotton, 2% spandex; unlined; wrinkle-prone; pockets
Fit: Best for someone with muscular/thicker legs and proportionately smaller waist.
Care: Dry clean only
The Cafe Trouser in Cotton were my second favorite style from this order (after the 1035 Trouser in Super 120s). The stiffer cotton blend gave these pants more structure than soft wool or stretchy ponte.

Style: Hutton Trouser in Super 120s
Color: Black/Navy/Heather Flannel/Light Heather Gray
Fabric: 100% wool; unlined; pockets
Fit: Best for someone with muscular/thicker legs and proportionately smaller waist.
Care: Dry clean only
I was disappointed in the Hutton Trouser as I thought for sure it would be a winner. Unfortunately, the wide legs were not scaled down adequately for petite sizes and ended up looking overwhelming.

Style: Minnie Pant in Stretch Twill (Also in Bi-Stretch Wool. Crewcuts version here)
Color: Black/Navy/Beechwood/Bright Berry/Byzantine Blue/Vibrant Flame
Fabric: 95% cotton, 5% spandex. Unlined. Material is structured but elastic.
Fit: The length in petite will probably be too short for those who lean toward average height. Would probably fit someone with a slim lower half best.
Care: Dry clean only
For some reason, the Minnie Pant in Stretch Twill was a very cropped length on me so women between height divisions can choose the longer style for the intended fit. It was one of two wild cards I threw in for good measure but neither worked out in the end (as expected). The style is probably most flattering on someone with thin, straight legs.

Style: Pixie Pant (shorter ladies can consider the style in Crewcuts: Dot print or four colors)
Color: Black/Navy/Heather Charcoal
Fabric: 63% viscose, 32% nylon, 5% spandex. Unlined. Material is stiff and only slightly elastic.
Fit: Ponte fabric clings tightly to one’s body and the style in “short” was still an inch or two too long for my legs (I am 5’2 with a long torso and average length legs).
Care: Dry clean only
Extremely tight pants usually don’t look great on women with thicker or shapelier legs and the Pixie Pant is a good example of why I stay away from the material. The length is also on the longer end so those on the shorter end of average height can try this style in “short.”

Style: 1035 Trouser in Super 120s
Color: Black/Navy/Heather Flannel/Heather Gray
Fabric: 100% wool. Unlined.
Fit: Best for someone with muscular/thicker legs and proportionately smaller waist.
Care: Dry clean only
The 1035 Trouser in Super 120s was my favorite out of the bunch. I thought it was flattering for my shape and if it came in a lighter color I could probably justify them at full-price but I have black pants that fit similarly after alterations so this wasn’t special enough to keep.

Up next, New York & Company (currently on super sale; a petite favorite – the 7th Avenue Pant – is merely $9 in two fun colors) and Black House | White Market.
